Reception New York Times literary critic Mary Gordon, praising Marya: A Life as Oates's "strongest book in years," laments that the descriptive authority of the narrative declines with the rising fortunes of the protagonist.Gordon, 1986: "I find 'Marya' her strongest book in years." As Marya ascends from her impoverished condition into the upper echelons of academia, Oates "unerring" powers of description are diminished:

Gordon notes that the autobiographical elements in the novel comport with aspects of Oates's early family history and her subsequent literary career.Gordon, 1986

Theme

Based on the preface that Oates provided in the early editions to the novel, literary critic Josephene Kealey conjectures that Marya is "Oates's literary self."Kealey, 2015 p. 4Gordon, 1986: "Like Joyce Carol Oates, Marya grew up in the 1950's, winning scholarships, studying intensely in college and graduate school, becoming a respected author while still in her 20's. The novel, says its author, is 'autobiographical in some details and in an emotional sense'". Kealey places great significance on the preface.Kealey, 2015 p. 4: "Oates's Preface calls attention to itself for the very fact that the author included it."

Kealey considers the Preface as a kind of Rosetta Stone, "a theoretical guide to how we are to read Marya. The lesson Oates wants us to learn from her Preface is one about the failure of knowledge."Kealey, 2015 p. 5
